Hey james how's it going?hope you're enjoying your summer ,and great videos thanks for the share! have you ever seen the white stripes on "The basement sessions "great preformance! And includes other great preformances by a couple of other artists! Anyhow do think that Schenn and conn will be fine in a bottom pairing role? With limited mins! If the young forward group is prepared to take the next jump and play to their potential, I personally think that this team is going to be so much more competitive! Can't believe that toronto couldn't work out a much better deal with the Hawks to get hammer! ,best of luck to Arizona and enjoy the rest of your summer! |

James you're heaping on the credit for this D in a huge dollop. And they are better on paper for sure. Hjalmerson is a strong upgrade, but the did lose some youth and speed in doing so. And Chycryn (sp) is a raw talent that will make many blunders this growing season.
OEL and Hjalmerson give a good lift but still a bottom 5 defense. |

James Tanner: Analyzing the Coyotes Defense - James_Tanner
Keep an eye out for Kyle Wood in the next couple years. Big RHD that has put up quite a few points in Tucson. Also has a pretty good slapshot. Doesn't use his size to his advantage yet (6'-5") and needs to work on his skating some. Those are all teachable though. |

Luke Schenn is absolutely a capable top 6 NHL defenseman. Interesting to compare the numbers of the Yotes defenseman. |

Hopefully kyle wood is doing that exactly! working with the best skating coach available, and continues to learn how to play defense without the puck! He's a nice long term prospect and speaking of prospect, hopefully Dylan Strome can put together a exceptional camp,he'll possibly/probably? Need time in the AHL, but he definitely needs an offseason of strength and skating conditioning,to hopefully get to the next level It's time! |

Yes I also believe that he could be an excellent bottom pairing guy! imho, playing 5/6? He's been around for enough years now to get his shat together! Or his nhl career could be coming to a close at the end of this contract, imo |

I can almost guarantee that Strome is in the NHL this fall, and I see no reason why he shouldn't be the heavy calder favorite. |

It would be fairly easy for any team to find six defenseman better than Schenn. He's just doesn't have favorable results when he's on the ice. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to learn he's below replacement level. |

I don't think I'm really giving too much credit here. OEL is a top ten D, I'd say closer to top five. An argument can be made that Hjalmmersson is the best defensive defenseman in the NHL, and Chychrun has massive potential. Goligoski, if he's forced down to a third pairing role becomes one of the better third pairing guys in the NHL.
If they can find a partner that makes Chychrun into a + possession player, they will shock people with how good they are. |

Good thanks, and I hope with you as well. I have not seen that performance, though I did once see them in concert, which was great. I do not agree than Schenn or Coonauton should be playing regularly on any team with playoff hopes. Not even sheltered minutes (and if you shelter your third pairing, you can never get good matchups for your better players, so it's a losing strategy). |

Franson is super slow....pretty much explains why he doesn't have a contract.

does any other team have more "potential lstars" then the coyotes?
prior to his acquisition have you ever said Hjalmarsson was one of the best dman?
why doesn't boy wonder scoop up franson in your opinion? |

Best case scenario for the Yotes is playing Hammer on the left side. Having watched 150+ Hawks games over the last 2 years, I can't tell you how many times I've seen him fail to clear the puck, or just get it into the neutral zone because he's playing his off side. He is almost always in the right place at the right time, but when he's playing on the left side, he is able to complete passes up ice much better. |

I think this is now the 7th time a team thought that Adam Clendening would be a "diamond in the rough" |

There is certainly reason for optimism regarding the Coyotes defense. It will be interesting to see just how much of a difference Hjalmarsson makes.
Hopefully Chychrun has a huge season.
The White Stripes have some great tunes, although I was never that impressed with Icky Thump for some reason.
Hope you're having a great summer James! |

Schenn at 44% Corsi doesn't belong in the NHL but the rest of the defenseman at pretty much the same % do? How about GA/60? Have you looked at that? The entire Yotes team is in the crapper in CF% including the stars.

Why doesn't Chychrun stand on his own with his possession stats? Why does he need a partner to turn him into a + possession player?

Well as an 18 year old his raw 5v5 CF% was right on par with the team average when he was off the ice. Chychrun can produce offense and James is simply suggesting a better partner will help his possession numbers. |

I don't disagree with that, I'm just pointing out the obvious inconsistency. Luke Schenn is not an NHL player based on his CF% of 44% when the entire team is at pretty much the same rate. One player is judged differently than another which is a massive inconsistency on Tanner's part.

The only way it's inconsistent is if I'm only looking at one stat, which I'm not.
I also sometimes have differing opinions on players who have the same amount of goals scored. When someone lists off the stat of goals in an article, no one pops up and says "You can't just use only goals to evaluate a player" because no one would ever think that. So why think it about corsi? It's just one way to look at a player.

You clearly did in your blog. Here is what you wrote.
"Luke Schenn was a 44.5% possession player last year and he probably shouldn't be on an NHL team looking to make the playoffs.
In limited minutes, Connauton had the same CF%. "
I don't think that about Corsi, and you know that. |
